The University of Texas at Austin conducted a study of nearly 800 smartphone users. Not having the phone in the same room allowed the users to "significantly outperform" those that had their phones on the desk. Apparently, just having the phone within sight or within easy reach reduces a person's ability to focus and perform tasks. Primarily because your brain is working overtime to NOT pick up the phone. Further proof that texting and driving is not a good thing.
